Southern Draw Cigars
Husband-and-wife team Robert and Sharon Holt founded Southern Draw Cigars in 2014. The entrepreneurial couple manages the brand with relatives and close friends, who proudly acknowledge it as a U.S. Veteran-owned company. Southern Draw cigars are blended and handmade at the AJ Fernandez factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The Holt family partnered with AJ Fernandez to produce a collection of small-batch cigars that has grown to include several blends drawn from a wide array of distinctive tobaccos. Recent accolades in Cigar Aficionado include high marks for the 93-rated Jacob’s Ladder Brimstone, 92-rated Kudzu, and 91-rated Cedrus.

SOUTHERN DRAW BRAND HISTORY
Southern Draw brand founders Robert and Sharon Holt are committed to fostering the kinship that brings cigar lovers together. Based in Austin, Texas, the Holt family upholds traditional Southern values and deeply appreciates the talented blenders and cigar rollers who craft Southern Draw cigars to the highest standards of quality and consistency. Robert and Sharon Holt express their gratitude by offering financial assistance to the dedicated cigar rollers in and around Estelí, Nicaragua, through their 300 HANDS project.
Southern Draw cigars enjoy a loyal following that continues to grow. Master blender AJ Fernandez was a budding cigarmaker when the Holt family began their search for a manufacturing partner over a decade ago. As AJ Fernandez has expanded his farms and factories, he’s grown Southern Draw’s small-batch portfolio with Robert and Sharon Holt.
SOUTHERN DRAW BRAND OVERVIEW
The Southern Draw Cigars lineup includes a host of unique cigars. In 2019, Cigar Aficionado rated Southern Draw Cedrus 91 points for its hearty profile of coffee bean, leather, toffee, and spices. Cedrus is named for the Cedrus libani wood used to make cigar boxes. The blend consists of an intricate assemblage of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos, grown from Cuban seeds, and a dark Indonesian wrapper.
Southern Draw Jacob’s Ladder is an excellent cigar to taste the nuances a Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper provides. Beneath it, well-aged long-fillers from Ecuador and Nicaragua fill out a series of popular sizes that deliver notes of molasses, coffee, cedar, and spice. A stronger version, called Jacob’s Ladder Brimstone, also utilizes an oily Pennsylvania Broadleaf. Dominican and Nicaraguan long-fillers rest inside a broadleaf binder grown in America. Brimstone pulses with notes of black pepper and wood. Hints of raisin, cocoa, and nuts emerge before a full-bodied finish. Cigar Aficionado rated the blend 93 points.
Kudzu from Southern Draw earned a 92-point rating, featuring an Oscuro wrapper, grown in Ecuador from Cuban-seed tobaccos, and a zesty blend of vintage Nicaraguan long-fillers. Toffee, molasses, and black pepper layer the palate with nutty and woody nuances.
Southern Draw broadened its audience with a milder cigar called the Rose of Sharon. A silky, seamless Ecuador Connecticut wrapper conceals a succulent interior of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. Velvety notes of white pepper, leather, and oak leave an easygoing impression. An additional small-batch version, called the Desert Rose, is rolled from Dominican and Honduran long-fillers and a Nicaraguan binder, finished in a golden Connecticut-seed wrapper from Ecuador.
One of Southern Draw’s original releases is Firethorn, blended from a Cuban-seed Rosado wrapper, grown in Ecuador, and a San Andrés binder with Nicaraguan long-fillers. A series of thicker sizes resonates with notes of cashew, caramel, almond, and cocoa throughout a pleasantly woody smoke.
At the end of 2024, Southern Draw began distributing two additional blends nationally: Morning Glory and Evening Primrose. Both were released in limited quantities the year prior. Morning Glory dials up a milder profile with subtle notes of graham cracker, baking spices, nuts, and herbs. A Connecticut Shade wrapper covers Cuban-seed tobaccos harvested on AJ’s Nicaraguan estates, culminating in a 90-rated blend.
Southern Draw Evening Primrose unfolds with bold notes of coffee, earth, cocoa powder, and pepper, courtesy of a San Andrés wrapper, an Ecuador Sumatra binder, and long-fillers from Nicaragua, Honduras, and the USA. Evening Primrose and Morning Glory are named for plants, highlighting Robert and Sharon’s love of gardening.
If you enjoy the AJ Fernandez portfolio, or Nicaraguan cigars in general, Southern Draw offers plenty of blends worth exploring. They’re consistent and affordable because they meet AJ’s high standards for quality and taste.
